In the final presidential debate of 2012, Barack Obama ridiculed rival Mitt Romney for having called Russia “the biggest geopolitical threat facing America.” And most of the press piled on. What Romney actually said was: “This is without question our No. 1 geopolitical foe. They fight for every cause for the world’s worst actors. The idea that [President Obama] has more flexibility in mind for Russia is very, very troubling indeed.” He did so in a CNN interview, responding to remarks made by the president — inadvertently picked up by a hot mic — telling then-outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that incoming President Vladimir Putin needed to give him space, at least until after the election.
