Federal court upholds ban on political contributions by contractors

A federal judge in Washington, citing the government's anti-corruption interest, today refused to block enforcement of rules that ban federal contractors from donating to political candidates and parties.

Three federal contractors sued the Federal Election Commission in Washington federal district court in October, saying the ban on donations violates constitutional protections in the First and Fifth amendments.

Represented by the American Civil Liberties Union and a law professor in Washington, the plaintiffs were seeking an injunction to stop enforcement of the ban. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg today ruled for the election commission.
