Ex-prosecutor George Holding defends John Edwards case

George Holding, who served as the U.S. Attorney in Raleigh before quitting last year and announcing a bid for Congress, insisted that the nearly $1 million Edwards backers paid to hide the candidate's mistress during the 2008 presidential campaign called out for action by prosecutors.

"Political corruption cases are the most difficult cases," Holding told POLITICO in a telephone interview Wednesday evening. "If we had not taken on these cases, not taken on this case, it would have been a dereliction of duty."

Asked if he was disappointed with Justice Department Criminal Division chief Lanny Breuer's decision to abandon the prosecution after the mistrial on most charges, Holding demurred.
