Romney Hits Perry Again on Social Security - NYTimes.com

If there was any doubt about what Mitt Romney thought was the most significant moment of Wednesday night’s debate, an e-mail from his campaign should clear that right up.

The subject line of the e-mail — “RICK PERRY: RECKLESS, WRONG ON SOCIAL SECURITY” — says it all.

Aides to Mr. Romney believe that Mr. Perry’s writings about the failure of the federal retirement program, and his refusal to back down from them on Wednesday, amount to a fatal flaw for his candidacy.

During the debate, Mr. Romney said that “our nominee has to be someone who isn’t committed to abolishing Social Security, but who is committed to saving Social Security.”

Less than 24 hours later, Mr. Romney’s campaign is eager to push that message. The e-mail from Mr. Romney’s team features a new montage of Mr. Perry’s face over the years with the words “CAREER POLITICIAN” imposed over the picture in bright red letters.
