It will be impressive if the FPPC can figure out how to do this and still satisfy all the disclaimer requirements. I am a huge fan of implementing new technology in campaigns -- usually the regulatory agencies are way behind in these sorts of things. Major props to FPPC Chair Ann Ravel for taking initiative on this and trying to make it work. I was disappointed when the FEC failed to do something similar; it would be great if California would be the state to show them how it is done!
"Something strange is happening: a California state agency is developing an innovative, user-friendly idea that can be implemented easily and quickly.
It's creative and, so far, non-controversial.
And it can become a reality without the governor or Legislature butting in and tripping all over themselves. Their sign-offs aren't necessary.
The Fair Political Practices Commission — California's political watchdog — is moving toward allowing people to text campaign contributions to candidates and causes."
